a garden with a pond similar to Gyeongju Anapji Pond

This pond reportedly imitated the shape of Korean peninsula and is surrounded by winding curves. The pond itself is not so large but you cannot see all the boundary of the pond at a glance because of its winding curves. This style is very similar to the Anapji Pond in Gyeongju, which means that it did not follow the typical Joseon’s garden style that traditionally required a square pond and a rounded isle in its center. This style symbolizes the Confucian cosmology(天圓地方思想, saying that the earth is square and sky is round). The streamlined shape of the pond is harmonized very well with gorgeous pine trees around the building and rocks of fantastic shape.

100 years old Thuja and Granite phallus

Thuja is very common nowadays but it was very rare 100 years ago. It is known as a holy tree planted at tombs of Confucius and emperors. It is said that two saplings from the holy graveyard of Ming’s emperor were planted here. However, the plant was afflicted with damages by women who wrongly believed that “the bark had a special effect for female trouble” or “it made infertile women had a baby”.

Alongside the wall

It is comfortable to walk alongside the stone wall in Sanun Village. Stonewall is not for separation between houses or between house and road, but for walkers’ joy. It does not overpower you, but wrap you with warmth and comfort.   

We live together

Unlike the majority of head houses, in Sanun Village, the eldest son alone does not take all the responsibility of ancestral ceremonies, but the family gathering takes the lead to share the responsibility. Maintaining and developing head house seems to be very difficult because of the economic burden the eldest son have to bear. Also, there is a gap between the ideal and real life. But Sanun Village members found the solution by sharing the burden.
