This house was designated as the Important Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 237 in 7th January 2000. It was first built in early 17th century by Sou Lee Gabal who is the 7th ancestor of the present owner Lee Gyeon, and the main building was reconstructed in 1880.
It was built originally with the shape of ‘口’ with open gaps, combining ‘ㄱ’ shaped Anchae with ‘ㄴ’ shaped Sarangchae. However, it is now ‘ㄷ’ shaped after the removal of a Jageun Sarangbang which was connected side by side with the Keun Sarangbang, after damaged by a typhoon several years ago.
The ‘一’ shaped Munganchae is located in the southern part of the building, and Oecheukgan(toilet) is in the western part. Also, there is Naecheukgan(toilet) in the north-western part.
Ansarangchae(Byeoldang) surrounded by a wall with a grove of trees is located In the westward of the house. In the southward, there are a pond and a garden beautifully decorated with various plants.
There are small gates(Ilgakmun) in the garden, which make you able to enter the garden from Anchae and Sarangchae.
The structure of the house is simple and plain-looking, with the classical taste of high-class house of the Joseon dynasty. It is regarded as a good reference for architecture research of artistic garden.
